Gregg House History

  • This historic home was built in 1846-1848 and is a Registered Texas Landmark
  • The home was previously owned by a Confederate Army Captain, Elbert Gregg, it remained in his family for over 120 years
  • Early historic visitors to the house included    Sam Houston and Governor James Hogg
  •  Built as a Dogtrot style house with 4 rooms and an open breezeway connecting them
  • In 1919 double French doors, transoms and sidelights were used to enclosed breezeway 
  • In 1935 an east wing was added and a storage shed was enclosed, a kitchen and indoor plumbing were also added during another renovation, and in the 1970’s a west wing was added.
  • Recent renovations were done to update most of the interior while keeping many of the original components of the home
  • Be sure to see the Belgium Chandeliers, the original wood floors and much more

  • Facilities        
  • 4 bedrooms sleeps 16 all twin beds, Serta pillows, cozy mattresses with Moda Linens, and comforter provided
  • 4 ½ baths with Spa quality bath towel, hand towel and wash cloths for each guest; soap, shampoo, conditioner and blow dryers are all being provided
  • Formal Living, Sun Room and Den, plenty of comfortable seating to accommodate guests
  • Formal Dining with seating for 16 guests to eat together, Breakfast Room for casual dining
  • Kitchen stocked with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, blender, water and coffee will also be provided
  • Open and well lit, original Wood Floors, original Belgium Chandeliers, updated Kitchen and Baths

 Rates: 

  • Friday – Saturday:  $65 per guest/per night (minimum 2 night stay)
  • Sunday – Thursday:  $55 per guest/per night (minimum 2 night stay)
  • Minimum  8 guests – Maximum 16 guests
  • One night stay per person deposit is due when booking a retreat
  • Remaining balance due 30 days prior to the retreat

Local Activities: 

  • Several blocks from Rusk Town Square, antique shop, coffee shop with sweets and food and other stores
  • Several blocks to a wonderful park with the longest walking bridge in North America
  •  Rusk is also home to the Texas Railroad Museum and Park, you can also ride the train to Palestine and back, and look into the Polar Express for kids at Christmas time
  • Only 15 miles to Jacksonville, Texas and approximately 35 miles to Tyler, Texas
  • Canton 1st Monday is about 70 miles away, it is worth the drive
  • Special activities on the Rusk Square throughout the year will be listed on our website, as we hear about them
  • Local restaurants include a Mexican, Seafood, BBQ, Whataburger, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Sonic…

 

Directions - Just 2 ½ hours (approximately 140 miles) from Houston or Dallas

From Houston: Take I-45 North toward Huntsville, take exit 113, US-19 toward Riverside/Crockett, in Crockett turn right on TX-Loop-304 (bypass Crockett), turn right on TX-21 toward Alto, in Alto Turn Left of US-69 toward Rusk, in Rusk take left on TX-Loop-62, ½ mile on right is back entrance to retreat, Presbyterian Church sign in yard, white house set back off road.

From Dallas: Take I-20 east toward Shreveport, take exit 556 toward US-69 Lindale/Tyler, take right on US-69 South, take right onto Loop-323 West, Right onto US-69 South Broadway Ave, stay on US-69 South into Rusk, take right on  TX-Loop-62, ½ mile on right is back entrance to retreat, Presbyterian Church sign in yard, white house set back off road.  You could also take US-175 South through Athens.

To Tyler:  Take left from back entrance onto TX-Loop-62, at stop take left onto US-69 North, approximately 40 miles, US-69 to Tyler.

To Canton:  Take left from back entrance onto TX-Loop-62, at stop take left onto US-69 North, take left onto US-175 West, take US-19 North toward Canton
