History of The Hen House
How did I get the name? I was raised in a small town in northeast Texas called New Summerfield; it is about 10 miles from Jacksonville and 20 miles from Tyler. We lived only a few miles from my grandparents and as a child I spent much of my time staying with them. They raised cattle, grew plants and raised laying hens and sold eggs. I spent time in the hen houses collecting and washing eggs. I also spent lots time with my grandmother (we called her MaMa) and she taught me to Quilt, Cross Stitch, Knit, and Crochet. It is the love for these crafts, my grandmother and the time we spent together that makes me enjoy having a store like this. I know she would be very proud of me and the store. We have used some of the old chicken coops from the farm around the store; it reminds me every day of my grandparents and the special time I had growing up in the country.
Just a little about the head chick. I love doing cross stitch, quilting and knitting. The decision to open a store started as a dream and my own stash of fabrics and yarns. When I see fabric and yarn I have visions of different things to make with it, I think that is what makes the store special for me. I guess that is why the store is really 2 stores in one, a Quilting Store and a Knitting store.
My husband Ralph "The Rooster" can be found around the store helping me most every weekend, he is very helpful. My son Christopher is in his 2nd year at Sam Houston State in the Accounting Honors program. My daughter Jennifer is a junior at Klein Collins High School and is busy playing Soccer and raising a Pig for her FFA Project. My Mother still lives near my grandparents land in east Texas and even started to knit.....if you knew my mom...you would be amazed. My father passed away the year after I opened, but I am sure he watching over us and the store every day.
We are blessed with a great group of chicks that work at the store; they are all very knowledgeable and talented. Many of them offer quilting classes and create the wonderful quilt kits and samples you enjoy at the store; I could not do it without them. I have been very blessed to meet some wonderful customers and friends and really enjoy being part of their lives. Stephanie
